The Launch of PARAsite
Last Updated: February 11, 2010
USC School of Architecture is pleased to announce the launch of PARAsite: http://arch-pubs.usc.edu/parasite/.
This blog has been set up as a forum for debate about recent developments within the USC School of Architecture in the area of parametric and algorithmic design. PARAsite also serves as a repository of records of past events, such as the Intensive Fields conference held on 12 December 2009. Full video documentation of this conference is now available at http://arch-pubs.usc.edu/parasite/intensive-fields/video-archive/.
USC has quite an established tradition of research in digital computation. Scott Fisher and Ann Balsamo have been pursuing advanced research in the field of Interactive Media for some time within the School of Cinematic Arts, and Berok Khoshnevis, based in the Viterbi School of Engineering, is the inventor of Contour Crafting and a leader in the field of digital fabrication. Other world leaders include Milind Tambe who works on Artificial Intelligence in the Computer Science Department, and Manuel Castells, the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society.
Under the new Dean, Qingyun Ma, the School of Architecture is now making a significant contribution to that tradition. Recent appointments include Francois Roche, Marc Fornes, Stefan Heinrich, Roland Snooks, Nick Pisca, David Gerber, Greg Otto, Roland Ritter and Neil Leach. Manuel DeLanda has been appointed from Fall 2010, and it is anticipated that other appointments will follow. The school now boasts some of the world's leading experts in MEL/Rhino scripting, digital fabrication, and digital theory.
USC has now become an interesting and dynamic space for debate, speculation and experimentation within the field of digital design. We want to share our thoughts with the rest of you.
