Re: The 4th Street Bicycle Boulevard

Dear Ms. Klausner:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA) I am writing to pledge our support for the neighborhood consensus building initiative led by the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) to transform 4th Street from Hoover St. to Cochran St. into a bicycle boulevard. This effort will help make the City of Los Angeles more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

As you've noted in your advocacy efforts, the implementation of a bicycle boulevard will benefit neighborhood residents, cyclists, pedestrians, and businesses alike. Slower traffic on 4th Street will make for a more comfortable and lively street environment, invigorating the neighborhoods it passes through and connecting communities. Additionally, facilitating more cycling on 4th Street will enable more efficient transit mobility on adjacent thoroughfares.

The streetscape improvements realized by transforming 4th Street will also create the potential for additional public benefits such as pocket parks, green parkways, storm water infiltration and more canopy trees. AIA|LA agrees with LACBC that the atmosphere created by bicycle boulevards will benefit cyclist, pedestrians and neighbors alike. This effort is a valuable opportunity for the City of Los Angeles and the region as a whole. Successful implementation will result in numerous benefits and AIA Los Angeles is extremely supportive of this effort. We look forward to seeing its fruition benefit our community.

Very truly yours,

Paul Danna, AIA President AIA Los Angeles
