It is with deep regret and sympathy we share with you the news that Stephen Kanner, FAIA, friend and former President of AIA|LA passed away Friday, July 2, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

A third generation architect and principal with Kanner Architects, Stephen was a native Angelino and advocate for the Los Angeles architectural community.

Stephen joined AIA in 1986, was elevated to a Fellow of the AIA in 1998 and served as AIA|LA President in 2005. As President, Stephen focused on increasing the number of AIA|LA student members by personally visiting all of the schools of architecture in the Los Angeles area to encourage students to become AIA|LA members. His efforts increased AIA|LA's student membership and participation from a handful to hundreds.

One of Stephen's proudest community accomplishments was co-founding the A+D museum with his good friend the Ghanaian architect Joe Osae-Addo, and others. His contributions to the Los Angeles built environment reach from Santa Monica to Koreatown.

AIA|LA sends its heartfelt condolences to Stephen's family and friends.
