I wonder whether we are massively behind the curve -- witness our stalemated political system and budget deficits -- or whether we are just the first to experience significant social, political and economic change, as California is often first, the leader. We forget that we once had the most advanced privately financed and operated transit system of any region in the country in our red car/streetcar system. It was built and operated with private capital and was a real estate investment without which houses would have not sold. We move to automobiles when they became affordable and promoted our personal freedom. Times change, people learn...and I wonder if California -- through it's mega-regions and cities -- have the opportunity to be the next wave of smart growth that is coupled with personal freedom...kind of our DNA?...
Alissa Walker is a freelance writer who can most often be found in Los Angeles. She writes about design, architecture, cities, transportation and walking for many publications, including GOOD and Fast Company, and is the associate producer for the public radio show "DnA: Design and Architecture." In 2010, Alissa served as the product design curator for the California Design Biennial and was named as a USC/Annenberg Getty Arts Journalism Fellow for her writing about design and urbanism. She lives in a royal blue house in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she throws ice cream socials, tends to a drought-tolerant garden, writes infrequently on her blog, Gelatobaby, and relishes life in L.A. without a car...
In downtown Long Beach there is a shuttle service call Passport that provide trips to many of Long Beach points of interest like the Aquarium of the Pacific , Queen Mary , Convention Center and many others. On one of several visits I took the Passport to Belmont Shores which was a beautiful scenic ride to shore and watched the boats and ships sail off into the sunset and it was free. With funds for operations and expansion arteries of buses and communities shuttles LA could be a city with a first class bus systems that connect the total populations to education, health care, job opportunities as well a recreation....
In Los Angeles, the time has come to get serious about where we want to encourage density. "Density Everywhere" is not meaningful planning policy, and it undermines the success of mass transit, particularly rail, and efforts to curb greenhouse gases generated by car trips. Some people don't fear density so much as they fear unmanaged, unplanned growth ... the notion that a community plan can be overridden in a minute without due consideration including regard for infrastructure, public services and design....
To maximize our investment in transportation improvements, change must simultaneously happen on three fronts: behavioral, operational and physical. The concept 'If we build it they will use it' would be a costly catastrophe if there is not parallel behavioral change. If you would like people to abandon the mode of transport they have been using for years, education and incentives must encourage that change. On the operational front, zoning may need to change in order for more integrated mixed use development. And the physical changes, of course, are obvious. You can build the best light rail system in the world, but if it drops people a mile from their destination, the project is a waste. To have a well used transportation system, the process must be well integrated and well planned, from start to finish....
When I was a student in Vienna, we often spent the weekend in Venice. There is a direct train connection between those cities, with one of the trains running overnight. The distance is about 390 miles, the train left at 9 pm, it had a dining car and sleeper berths. It was fairly inexpensive, with a student pass. We had dinner on the train, slept and arrived at 5 am right on the Canale Grande, in the heart of Venice. Many many students traveled the same way, so you got to meet new people and spend two days in one of the prettiest cities with little cost or stress....
We can maximize our investment in the next round of transit improvements by insuring that the proposed alignments and station locations for new systems offer the very best connectivity and convenience for transit users. For example, the Crenshaw Line as planned features a northern terminus at the Exposition Line and a southern Terminus at LAX. It is imperative that the design of the transit user's experience transferring from the Crenshaw Line to the Expo Line is seamless, safe, and convenient. Likewise, at the LAX station, the design of the transfer system from the Crenshaw Line to the Airport transit system (people mover, tram, etc.) must be seamless and convenient to insure maximum use by business travellers and commuters....

Or was it during my early travels to places like Sumatra and Sri Lanka?...
